 Over the last thirty five years Professor Alan C. Lazer has been 
 a leading figure in the development of min-max methods and critical 
 point theory for applications to partial differential equations. 
 The author, his former student, summarizes from his own perspective 
 Professor Lazer's contributions to the subject.
