Abstract: 
  Under appropriate, almost optimal, assumptions on the data we prove
  existence of standing wave solutions for a nonlinear Schr\"odinger
  equation in the entire space $\mathbb{R}^3$ when the real electric
  potential satisfies a linear Poisson equation.
