\begin{abstract}
  In this article we discus the doubly nonlinear incompressible 
  Navier-Stokes equations
  \[

  \operatorname{div}(u) = 0\,,

  where $u$ models the velocity vector field
  of a homogeneous incompressible non-Newtonian fluid
  whose momentum $b(u)$ depends nonlinearly on $u$.
  Particularly, under certain regularity assumptions it is shown
  that $u$ becomes extinct in finite time
  for sufficiently small initial values $u(0)$,
  if $a(\nabla^{\rm sym} u) := (1 + |\nabla^{\rm sym} u|^{p-2})
  \nabla^{\rm sym} u$ and $b(u) := |u|^{m-2} u$ with $1 < p < m < \infty$.

\section{Introduction}

Doubly nonlinear incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (DNNS)

In fact, while in \eqref{eq:NavierStokesEquationsForNonNewtonianFluids}
only the viscous stress tensor $a$ is allowed to depend nonlinearly
on the symmetric part $\nabla^{\operatorname{sym}} u$ of the derivative of $u$,
in \eqref{eq:DoublyNonlinearNavierStokesEquations} additionally
the relation between the velocity vector field $u$
and the momentum $b(u)$ of the fluid is allowed to be nonlinear.
Observe that in the case $b(u)=u^\sharp$ 
equation \eqref{eq:DoublyNonlinearNavierStokesEquations} is just the dual of
equation \eqref{eq:NavierStokesEquationsForNonNewtonianFluids}.
In fact, the divergence of a smooth $(1,1)$-tensor $\alpha \otimes X$
is the one-form defined by
$\operatorname{div}(\alpha \otimes X) := \operatorname{div}(X)\alpha 
+ \nabla_X \alpha$, and $\operatorname{div}(u)=0$ as well as 
$(\nabla_u u)^\sharp = \nabla_u u^\sharp$  are valid.

Abstractly \eqref{eq:DoublyNonlinearNavierStokesEquations} 
is a doubly nonlinear evolution equation.
Let us refer to \cite{Alt,Barbu,DiBenedetto,Maitre}
for general results about such equations.
Usually the map $b$ is assumed to have a potential $\phi_b$,
and in this case \eqref{eq:DoublyNonlinearNavierStokesEquations}
generalizes \eqref{eq:NavierStokesEquationsForNonNewtonianFluids}
by allowing the fluid to have kinetic energy $\int_\Omega \phi_b(u) \,dx$
instead of the standard quadratic kinetic energy
$\frac{1}{2} \int_\Omega |u|^2\,dx$.

In this situation doubly nonlinear incompressible Navier-Stokes equations
\eqref{eq:DoublyNonlinearNavierStokesEquations} may be considered as model
for a fluid in a medium which interacts with the fluid.
The kinetic energies \eqref{eq:KineticEnergyPowerLaw1} or
\eqref{eq:KineticEnergyPowerLaw2} with $m<2$
correspond to the case of a porous medium,
where the particles of the fluid are retarded
for large velocities $|u|$ due to the interaction
so that the kinetic energy of the fluid
is less than the standard quadratic kinetic energy.
In the case $m>2$ the particles of the fluid
are accelerated for large velocities $|u|$,
and the kinetic energy is greater than the standard quadratic kinetic energy.
Further, in the situations \eqref{eq:KineticEnergyPowerLaw1} or
\eqref{eq:KineticEnergyPowerLaw3} with $m<2$ the particles of the fluid
are accelerated for small velocities $|u|$ due to the interaction,
while for $m>2$ they are retarded for small velocities $|u|$
in the case \eqref{eq:KineticEnergyPowerLaw1}
resp. accelerated for large velocities $|u|$
in the case \eqref{eq:KineticEnergyPowerLaw3}.

Similarly, the viscous stress tensor $a$ is often assumed
to depend on the strain tensor $\nabla^{\rm sym} u$ by a power law like

The case $p<2$ models shear thinning (=pseudoplastic) fluids like blood,
while the case $p>2$ models shear thickening (=dilatant) fluids
like a thick slurry of beach sand.
Note that in contrast to the case
$a(\nabla^{\rm sym} u) := (1 + |\nabla^{\rm sym} u|)^{p-2} \nabla^{\rm sym} u$
equation \eqref{eq:DoublyNonlinearNavierStokesEquations}
becomes singular at points $x$ with $(\nabla^{\rm sym} u)(x)$ for $p<2$
and \eqref{eq:ViscousStressTensorPowerLaw1}.

\subsection{Outline}

In the first part of this article existence of weak solutions
to doubly nonlinear incompressible Navier-Stokes equations
\eqref{eq:DoublyNonlinearNavierStokesEquations} is discussed.
The book \cite{PLLions} is an excellent reference
for the theory of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations
\eqref{eq:NavierStokesEquationsForNonNewtonianFluids} with linear $a$.
Existence of weak solutions to these classical equations
was first proved by \cite{Leray,Hopf}.
For nonlinear monotone $a$ existence of weak solutions was shown by
\cite{JLLions} and \cite{Ladyzhenskaya} under the condition
$p \ge \frac{3n+2}{n+2}$. In \cite{Malek} and \cite[Chapter 5]{MalekBook}
existence of weak solutions to
\eqref{eq:NavierStokesEquationsForNonNewtonianFluids}
under periodic boundary conditions was shown for $p > \frac{3n}{n+2}$
and even for non-monotone $a$ (see \cite[Chapter 5, Theorem 3.97]{MalekBook}).
Quasimonotone viscous stress tensors $a$ were discussed in \cite{Dreyfuss}.

A first attempt to prove existence of weak solutions
to doubly nonlinear incompressible Navier-Stokes equations
\eqref{eq:DoublyNonlinearNavierStokesEquations}
in the case $p<n$ under the condition $mp' < p^*$
\footnote{Note that in the case $p<n$ the condition $mp' < p^*$
  is equivalent to $p > \frac{(m+1)n}{m+n}$
  and thus to $p > \frac{3n}{n+2}$ in the special case $m=2$.}
can be found in \cite{Merker}.
In section \ref{sec:ExistenceOfWeakSolutions},
existence of weak solutions of \eqref{eq:DoublyNonlinearNavierStokesEquations}
is established using pseudomonotonicity,
and the limit passage in the viscous stress tensor is rigorously justified.

The main aim of this article is to discuss
extinction of the velocity vector field $u$ in finite time.
For doubly nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations
it is well-known that in the case $p<m$ of fast diffusion
solutions become extinct in finite time, see \cite{Chunhua}.
However, to prove a similar result for solutions $u$ of
\eqref{eq:DoublyNonlinearNavierStokesEquations} or
\eqref{eq:NavierStokesEquationsForNonNewtonianFluids},
some information about the regularity of the pressure is needed.
Therefore, in section \ref{sec:RegularityOfThePressure}
the Poisson problem for the pressure is investigated,
and in section \ref{sec:Extinction}
under some regularity assumptions extinction of $u$
is proved for small initial velocities under the condition $p<m$.
Particularly, in the case $m=2$ this result indicates
that sufficiently slow shear thinning fluids come to rest in finite time.
This property agrees with the observation
that fluids like blood or honey stop flowing,
if no external energy is used to accelerate them.
In contrast to the series of articles
\cite{AntontsevDiazShmarev, Antontsev1, Antontsev2, Antontsev3, Antontsev4, Antontsev5},
where the body force $f=f(b(u))$ is assumed to be a feedback dissipative field
satisfying a condition like $f(v)v \le - C |v|^2$,
here the much more general case
\[

with a continuous map $g$ satisfying $g(0)=0$ and
$g(v) \cdot v \le C |v|^2$ for a constant $C<\infty$
and a potential $U$ on $\Omega$ is discussed.
This condition implies that $f(\cdot,0)$ is potential
and $f(x,\cdot)$ has at most linear growth,
but $f$ is not restricted to point into the opposite direction of $v$.

\section{Existence of weak solutions} \label{sec:ExistenceOfWeakSolutions}

In this section doubly nonlinear incompressible Navier-Stokes equations
\eqref{eq:DoublyNonlinearNavierStokesEquations} are considered
either under periodic boundary conditions on the fundamental domain
$\Omega := (0,L)^n \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ of the periodic lattice $\mathbb{R}^n/(L\mathbb{Z})^n$, $L>0$,
or on the whole space $\Omega = \mathbb{R}^n$,
or on a bounded domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n$
with smooth boundary $\partial \Omega$
under Dirichlet boundary conditions $u = 0$ on $\partial \Omega$.
The aim of this section is to prove existence of weak solutions
for the prototypical power laws,
i.e. for \eqref{eq:KineticEnergyPowerLaw1}, \eqref{eq:KineticEnergyPowerLaw2}
or \eqref{eq:KineticEnergyPowerLaw3} determining the kinetic energy $\phi_b$
resp. the relation $b$ between velocity and momentum,
and for \eqref{eq:ViscousStressTensorPowerLaw1}
or \eqref{eq:ViscousStressTensorPowerLaw2}
determining the viscous stress tensor $a$,
where the parameters $1 < m,p < \infty$ are fixed.

To realize \eqref{eq:DoublyNonlinearNavierStokesEquations}
as an equation in a Banach space,
for the power law \eqref{eq:ViscousStressTensorPowerLaw1}

the corresponding (periodic with zero average resp. compactly supported)
smooth divergence-free vector fields on $\Omega$
w.r.t. the norm $\|u\|_{X_p}:=\|\nabla u\|_p$.
Equivalently, the norm $\|\nabla^{\rm sym} u\|_p$ can be chosen,
where $\nabla^{\rm sym} u$ denotes the symmetric part of the derivative of $u$,
see \cite[5.1.1]{Malek}.
For the power law \eqref{eq:ViscousStressTensorPowerLaw2}
we replace $W^{1,p}$ by $W^{1,p} \cap W^{1,2}$ in the former definitions
and use the norm $\max(\|\nabla u\|_p,\|\nabla u\|_2)$.
In the following, denote by $X_p$ one of these spaces.

Further, for $\Omega=\mathbb{R}^n$ or bounded $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n$
and the kinetic energies \eqref{eq:KineticEnergyPowerLaw1}
or \eqref{eq:KineticEnergyPowerLaw2}
we consider the Banach space $Y_m := L^m(\Omega,\mathbb{R}^n)$.
Note that the closure of $X_p \cap Y_m$ in $Y_m$ is

In case of the kinetic energy \eqref{eq:KineticEnergyPowerLaw3}

The Banach space $Y_m$ plays the role of the Hilbert space 
$L^2(\Omega,\mathbb{R}^n)$ in the usual setting for equation
\eqref{eq:NavierStokesEquationsForNonNewtonianFluids}.

It remains to realize every term of

An important role in the discussion of doubly nonlinear evolution equations
is played by the Legendre transform

\section{Regularity of the pressure} \label{sec:RegularityOfThePressure}

An important problem in fluid dynamics
is the regularity of the pressure function $\pi$
which is implicitly defined by the incompressibility condition $\operatorname{div}(u)=0$.
Here some information about the pressure is needed,
because in our proof of extinction in finite time
equation \eqref{eq:DoublyNonlinearNavierStokesEquations} is tested
by a function with nonvanishing divergence.
For results about the regularity of pressure
in case of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations
\eqref{eq:NavierStokesEquationsForNonNewtonianFluids} with linear $a$
let us refer to \cite[Theorem 3.1-3.4, Remark 3.1]{PLLions}
and \cite[III.§1 Proposition 1.1 + 1.2]{Temam}.
Similar as in the linear case,

seems to be an open problem.

\section{Extinction} \label{sec:Extinction}

It is generally known (see e.g. \cite{Chunhua})
that weak solutions $u$ of doubly nonlinear diffusion equations
$\frac{\partial u^{m-1}}{\partial t} - \Delta_p u = 0$
to small initial values become extinct in finite time
in the case $p < m$ of fast diffusion,
i.e. there exists a time $T>0$ such that $u(t) \equiv 0$ for a.e. $t \ge T$.
For doubly nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations,
additionally the transport term, the pressure term and the body force term
have to be handeled to obtain a similar result.
Note that in the case $f(x,v) = g(v) - dU(x)$ with $g(0)=0$

\subsection*{Conclusion}

In this article extinction of fluid vector fields for non-Newtonian fluids
modeled by nonlinear of doubly nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations was discussed.
A method was presented which allows to prove
that slow shear-thinning fluid come to rest in finite time.
However, this method needed some information
about the regularity of the very weak solution
of the corresponding pressure Poisson problem under Neumann boundary conditions,
and the validity of this regularity seems to be an open problem.
